Nine nights of garba is the real test of jewellery

Most jewellery is designed to be looked at. Navratri jewellery has to be danced in — four hours a night, nine nights running, in a crowd, in the heat, while moving constantly. Anything heavy becomes painful by the third night. Anything with nickel in it becomes a rash.

Why sweat is the problem, not the design

If your ears itch by the second night of garba, or your neck has a green mark under the chain, that isn't your skin being difficult. Nickel is the metal behind most jewellery allergies, and sweat — which is mildly acidic — sets off the reaction. Hours of dancing produces a lot of it.

Good news about the climate

Ahmedabad is hot but dry, and dry is much kinder to jewellery than coastal humidity. Plating lasts noticeably longer here than in Mumbai or Chennai. The heat still means sweat, so the wipe-down habit matters — but you're starting from an easier position than most Indian cities.
